Seven years ago in May of 2008, Shalauna lived in New York City. She was living the dream, working and living right in the heart of the financial district in Manhattan.
That’s when she had the idea. The business plan that would change her life forever!
If executed, it would simplify and automate 1031 exchanges across the industry. But she needed help. Her idea required “Tech People”. So, she called her friend Tyler. He loved the concept the moment it entered into his mind. “But”, he told her, “we need a developer to build this system. And I know just the guy…”
I lived in Springville, Utah at the time and had been nerding out in “Tech” since the moment I laid my eyes on a computer. Tyler and I grew up together, and now we were both getting paid to do what we do best: tell computers what to do.
When you’re a developer, you hear a thousand ideas. Everybody’s got one, and all they need is for you to do all the work.
But I have to admit, I was pretty exhilarated after hearing her idea. I hung up the phone and did a lot of thinking. I didn’t know much anything about the investment world Shalauna was a part of, and I certainly had no idea if she was someone I’d like to be in business with. I also had never been to NYC.
That’s why I insisted that we fly to NYC at once. This could be the idea that makes us all rich, and if that were true, I had to meet the woman behind it all.
